Treatment of adults can be started at any age provided that bone quantity and quality is satisfactory, all teeth are cured and no acute inflammatory conditions of parodontium (gums) are found. Fixed orthodontic appliances are used.
Placement of the apparatus on one teeth arch takes about 40 minutes and is painless. After placement of the apparatus (on the next morning, typically) some patients may experience tenderness, increased teeth mobility due to distension of the periodontal membrane and pain. Abrasions of lip and cheek mucosa may occur, as well. In most cases these symptoms resolve within 10-14 days.
Depending on type of occlusion defect and extend of teeth shift, active treatment of adults take 2 to 2.5 years. During this period, the patient has to visit the orthodontist once in a month to undergo follow-up examination and for activation of the apparatus.
After the teeth are stabilised in the desired position, the fixed apparatus is removed and a transparent retention plate is prepared that keeps the teeth in position and prevents recurrence of the defect.
If you are an adult, when should you seek orthodontic advice?
- If you are not satisfied with position of you teeth,
- If you are afraid of smiling,
- If you have an impression of accelerated aging of your face in the regions of mouth angles and of external eye angles,
- If you observe elongation of crowns of your teeth or their excessive "crowding", especially during your eighth teeth eruption,
- If a tooth or a group of teeth seem loose,
- In case of initial symptoms of parodontosis,
- In case of teeth attrition (especially lower front teeth),
- In case of difficulty with wide mouth opening (in particular in the morning),
- If you experience in the morning teeth "numbness" or muscle fatigue (especially in the region of the mandibular angle),
- If you suffer from headaches of unclear origin.
